Hope padded through the rooms of her new residence with her nose held high, sniffing at the air as the scent of chicken and something more drifted about the place, knowing which room it was coming from but rejecting her impulse so as not to give the game away. She was here not to reveal too much too soon, but to look out for the male who had adopted her off the street, as she had been wandering in search of him for days. He was her new mission and someone new for her to bond with, along the trail of making sure he came to no harm. Trotting back a little, in plain view she spotted him standing at the kitchen counter with his back to her, focused on the crock pot on the stove beside him and she gave a gentle snort to signal her arrival.
Nash had tried some days ago when he brought her home to settle a collar around her neck, but the pooch wasn’t having any of it, so he had settled for a knitted jumper instead, which she had been wearing quite proudly since he found her. Surprisingly, it was a much easier task. All he had done to try and get the collar on hadn’t worked, yet she did not struggle with a jumper ; a trait he considered wildly unusual for an animal, especially one that was a stranger to him no more than a few days ago. Nevertheless he hadn’t taught her much, either, and all by herself she was able to navigate his home and let him know when she was hungry or when she needed to use the bathroom. It was a headscratcher because he had found her wandering outside alone, but he thought no more of it after they got back. He just continued about his daily routines and she, hers.
With a soft wag of her tail as she approached the distressed male, she padded at his trouser leg, sitting back on her hind legs and making a point to sniff the air again. Nash turned at an angle, spotting the dog at his feet and swiped his hand behind one of her ears to give her a little scratch as she offered a tiny bark in approval, sitting a second time and tilting her head to one side. The male shook his head as he chuckled at her behaviour, but she’d been eating her meals with him since she got here and so he understood the rumbling hunger in her belly at such a smell drifting through the house. ‘ I know, I know, it’s almost ready .. not long now, but I think I may have done it a little too long, ‘ he muttered the last half but she heard him clear as day and let out another bark.
Hope always wished she could be more vocal in this realm but she knew that would only cause trouble, plus her human was under enough stress as it was with work and she made it her priority to make him happy. Even if just with a wag of her tail or her happy little barks as she climbed all over his pillow each morning, it seemed that these actions meant more to him than he would ever try to express with words. As he stirred the mixture again in the pot, she trotted over to her designated eating area across the kitchen and lapped up some water, settling herself down over the cool marble floor as she waited patiently for his cooking to prove skillful. She didn’t have any doubts that it would be tasty —— she had known about him a long time ago and he always thought little of himself where hobbies outside of the workplace were concerned.
For her part in all of this, she had to keep tabs and make sure he was safe, both physically and emotionally as the stress of his job sent him home most days with a worn look in his eyes, but they seemed to light up a little at the sight of her as she came bounding through the house to greet him at the front door. In time, she knew that she could reveal herself, but perhaps it was best to wait for the opportunity to present itself; if he found himself in any sort of danger or threats were posed, she would have little choice in the matter either way.
